Exercise More, Sneeze Less
12.27.04 (8:42 am)   [edit]

As the cold and flu season kicks into high gear this winter, it's good to know that regular exercise may be your first line of defense.

Although there has been some debate about the effects of exercise on immunity, a new study suggests that being active may actually reduce the number of colds people get each year.

Researchers from the University of South Carolina in Columbia surveyed 547 healthy adults at regular intervals over the course of one year.

Participants noted both their activity levels and the number of colds they had experienced. For this study, moderate or vigorous exercise was defined as anything more strenuous than a walk, including household chores and leisure activities.

The average adult will suffer through two to five colds per year. However, study participants who reported being most active had 25 percent fewer colds than those who were the least active.

The caveat to this study is that previous research has demonstrated that too much or too little exercise can have an adverse effect on the immune system, which could up one's risk of developing a cold.

Marathon runners, for example, appear to be more likely to develop a cold in the week immediately following a race than non-runners.

The key is to strike the right balance between exercise, good nutrition and adequate sleep.

Work Stress Equals Fewer Workouts
12.15.04 (12:53 pm)   [edit]

Demanding bosses and looming deadlines make it difficult for employees to stick to their exercise regimens, according to the results of a new study.

Researchers at Middlesex University in the U.K. surveyed more than 200 employees of a computer company about their exercise intentions and then again a week later to see how well they followed through on those intentions.

Fifty-four employees were classified as having a high-stress job, which was defined as having high demands and little control over their work.

Not only did these workers express lower self-confidence in their ability to stick to an exercise program, they also exercised less frequently than did their colleagues.

Furthermore, the employees who said they intended to exercise but were unsuccessful were most likely to cite work demands as the reason they didn't make it to the gym.

Lead researcher Dr. Nicola Payne believes ''people in high-strain jobs may not have the time for exercise or they may be too fatigued to exercise because they need more time to recover after the working day.''

She hopes that employers will come to recognize exercise as a priority and actively encourage it.

Ease Stress in as little as 30 Minutes

Overwhelmed By Holiday Stress?
12.12.04 (6:11 am)   [edit]

December is upon us....This can't take away your busy lifestyle, but here are some coping mechanisms that's worked for me...
Hopefully, they'll be of help to you too!

1.  Get 8 hours of sleep each night.  Studies show we are far more productive when we are rested.  Gentle Sleep Complex or Super Cal-Mag Plus help ease wired minds.

2. Drink 8+ glasses of PURE water each day.  The first sign of dehydration is mental confusion.

3. Begin your day with a protein-centered breakfast for clearer thinking and more energy.  Eggs, cottage cheese and yogurt will do but I particularly enjoy the convenience of the Shaklee's Energizing Soy shake for convenience, great nutrition and a yummy taste.

4. Take 1-2 Stress Relief Complex when you are feeling "uptight".  You'll be amazed when major hurdles turn into little bumps within 20 minutes.

5. MoodLift helps chase holiday blues.

6. Take your Shakee Basics, Optiflora and Immune Building Complex to build your immunity against flu, colds and viruses.  These can replace a flu shot for you!

7. Get some exercise...30 minutes a day will clear your thinking, reduce your stress and help burn calories all day long.  Drink water!!  Heavy exercisers use Performance.

8. Take 20-30 minutes every day for yourself.  Quiet time is restoration time.

9.  Say NO to optional tasks or social obligations that you find particularly stressful.

10. Capture the great moments on your "internal camera".  Hit replay on your memory to give you instant pleasure and warm feelings during the dull times!

Here's to a Stress-less Holiday Season!

Excercising with Asthma Warning
12.08.04 (6:16 pm)   [edit]

Many people with asthma are able to exercise safely, but new research suggests that dehydration may increase the likelihood of an attack.

Researchers at the University of Buffalo, New York, found that individuals with exercise-induced asthma experienced a significant decrease in lung function when dehydrated.

It is speculated that dehydration can cause bronchospasm, which is a constriction or tightening of the airways of the lungs.

Another Torn ACL Healed with Shaklee!!!
12.07.04 (8:22 pm)   [edit]

By: Pat McNeal

Three years ago, I posted a story about how I healed a badly damaged knee, including a torn MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) and ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament), with Shaklee products.

Now it is happening again!  John Camper, a friend from church, tore his ACL on November 5th, just 30 days ago yesterday.  I talked with him about what I had done, and he wanted to try it.  He went to the same orthopedic surgeon I did, and was told essentially, "Well, yes, Pat did do that, but her case was the exception.  Yours is a different kind of tear; her ligament was torn in the middle and your ligament is torn loose from the bone.  You won't be able to heal it with supplements."

Still, he wanted to try and went on the Shaklee products I recommended.  Within 3 weeks he was walking without his brace, and when I saw him yesterday, just 30 days later, I couldn't tell there was ever anything wrong with his leg!  He had no limp, has not been falling, had full flexion and mobility, and he could even twist while standing and kneel on his knee; much to his surprise, the kneeling didn't cause the pain it did just the day before!  Although he hasn't yet had another MRI to prove it's healing, it's really quite obvious what's going on in the knee.

WOW!!!  This is incredible to see this in just 30 days!  My knee took a lot longer to heal, but then it was a lot worse to begin with (2 ligaments were torn, the others were sprained and the cartilage was torn) and the Joint Health Complex has been reformulated since my experience.

John returns to the doctor this Thursday.  I can't wait to hear the Doc's reaction, because when he last saw him, the doctor said that although it had made some progress, it wouldn't get any better than it was then.  Boy, will he be surprised!  I plan to follow up with him to help him see the potential of these products.  I mean, that's two out of two ACL's healed with Shaklee - we're batting 1000 here!  Surely now he must take notice; not only has Shaklee healed two torn ACL's, but they were two different kinds of tears!

John didn't need huge amounts of product to do what he did.  For the most part, he used as directed on the label.  The supplements he went on include:

Vita Lea without iron (2-3 daily)
Physique (once daily)
Optiflora System (once daily)
Joint Health Complex (6 daily)
Vita C - SR (6 daily)
Vita E Complex (2-3 daily)
Super Cal-Mag (6 daily)
Alfalfa (10 daily )
Omega 3 Complex (3 daily)

John used pure borage oil at the beginning for pain and inflammation.  He also does a lot of juicing of fruits, and began throwing in some alfalfa sprouts.  He had ordered a non-Shaklee product for TMJ just prior to the accident, and he has been taking that as well.  The TMJ is gone now, so it's hard to say whether it was the Shaklee or the other product, but personally, I'm confident that Shaklee products would have done it without the other.

Check this out... Shaklee Products & Major Surgery
12.06.04 (11:04 am)   [edit]

By: Nancy Pugh

One of the benefits of using Shaklee nutritional supplements really came home to me recently.
I developed some intermittent abdominal pain while driving to visit my youngest son & his family, in Urbana, IL. By the time I got there, the pain was constant.

To make a longer story short “I went to the Emergency Department at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, was admitted, had surgery on my colon (which had developed a fold) and recovered quite rapidly. Shaklee nutrition made all the difference in the world to the speed in which I have recovered." The 10-inch incision on my stomach has healed nicely, and my energy is good. All my lab work was excellent and no disease was found in the removed section of colon. It was a mechanical problem.

None of us knows when we may have a health challenge. Having exceptional nutritional status going into major surgery put me in the top few percent of people in the U.S.

My body had all of the nutrients and protein it needed to meet the crisis, even though I had no food for a week other than clear liquids on some days. After discharge, I cleaned my incision with Basic-H daily.

Since my staples came out on Oct. 25, I have applied Shaklee Enfuselle C+E cream mixed with Calming Complex. There will be minimal scarring. And you can believe that my husband brought all my Shaklee supplements into my hospital room, where I began using them the day after surgery. And this is just ONE of the many reasons we're hooked on Shaklee!

Get Ready To Hit The Slopes
12.05.04 (5:43 am)   [edit]

You don't have to wait for the snow to start falling to get ready for ski season. Start your training now and you'll be sailing past those other ski bums on your way down the mountain.

Dusting the competition or showing off to friends are not the only reasons to get in shape before ski season. Skiing is an activity that requires a variety of skills: strength, endurance, balance and coordination. Hit the slopes without developing these skills and you may be in for more than a little embarrassment - you might even hurt yourself.

Sports specific training

This is where sports-specific training comes in. Generally speaking, sports-specific training programs involve focusing on the various skills associated with a particular activity.

Depending on the sport, this may include health-related fitness components such as cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.

A specific program may also take into account skill-related measures of fitness such as agility, balance, coordination, power, speed and reaction time. Most sports require a mixture of these components.

Skiing is a sport that relies heavily on skill-related fitness. A traditional fitness program, which includes a combination of weight training and cardiovascular exercise, will only take you so far.

A specific training program to develop specific skills for skiing will take you from the peaks to the valleys in record time.

Get ready to ski

There are several ways to begin a sports-specific training program. The simplest way is to include several new exercises in your regular workout schedule.

For example, performing wall sits that require you to ''sit'' against a wall will help build up the isometric strength needed for the tuck position in skiing. Squats and lunges will build lower body strength for skiing tough terrain like moguls.

Exercises such as crunches to work your abdominals are essential in creating a solid ''core'' for balance and agility.

It is important to train your body to withstand and absorb the impact associated with skiing. Plyometric movements, such as hopping from side to side, develop muscle power and strength as well as improve agility.

In sports-specific training, you are limited only by your imagination. Go for it... and have fun!

Astonishing Facts about Back Pain
12.03.04 (4:59 am)   [edit]

By Sandi Kalinowski, R.N., N.C.S.N., B.A.
I just read the email on back pain and our glucosamine.  Our glucosamine is fantastic.  And anyone that improves on glucosamine should add optiflora

Most people, and physicians do not know that glucosamine is made in the NORMAL intestine.  Of course, most people do not have NORMAL intestines.  My holistic physician prescribed billions of acidofilus after I had a severe back injury from an auto accident.  Her brand of intestional flora made no decrease in symptoms.  Then Shaklee came out with Optiflora.  WOW, did it make a difference.  Due to over two years of physical therapy, and shaklee nutrition I avoided back surgery to insert surgical steel rods to stabilize my back.  My husband is out of town so today it my my job to "muck"
A healthy colon,intestines:
--> makes glucosamine from glutamine in intestinal cells
--> maximizes nutrition
--> supports immune system throughout the body
--> eliminates toxins
--> synthesizes b vitamins and vitamin K

A healthy colon, intestines, is truly the keystone of a healthy body !

When Optiflora first came out, we "in the field" heard stories of people with lung infections, yeast infections, vaginal infections, stomach ailments, and even significant improvements of debilitating conditions as C.O.P.D.(congestive obstructive pulmonary disease)and emphysema.    Most of us did not know why this was happening.

The very basic answer is that if the intestine is filled with bad bacteria then the good nutrients we take in are used up in the intestines and cannot leave the intestines to do good work in the rest of the body.

If we work to get more good bacteria, acidofilus, then the good nutrients leave the intestine and go to work in the rest of the body.

The body should have  POUNDS of good bacteria...TRILLIONS  of bacteria, but after age 30 the number is drastically reduced.

Health is a state of well being, not merely the absence of disease.
For me Optiflora is the cornerstone.

Back Pain – Degenerative Disc and Shaklee Joint Health Complex

I have had back pain on and off for the last several years. Last year, the pain continued to worsen and gradually began to affect my daily routine, such as standing for any length of time, weight lifting, etc.

An MRI revealed that I had two discs that showed signs of degeneration. The doctor prescribed physical therapy to strengthen the back, a prescription for pain blockers and an electronic pain-blocking device as well (TENS unit) neither of which I used.

During this time, I did quite a bit of research and found that glucosamine supplementation was known to help some patients with certain types of back pain. I discussed the possibility with my doctor, and to my surprise, he advised me to try it.

I began to take Shaklee Joint Health Complex - 1500 mg (3 capsules per day as recommended on the label) all in one does for greatest effectiveness. By the end of the first month, I had already noticed a difference. I continued to improve with each passing month; after 6 months, I was able to lift light weights, walk on the treadmill and do many things I had been unable to do before. I have now reduced the dosage of the Joint Health Complex to a maintenance dose of 2 per day taken at lunch and dinner.

I can truthfully say that I am at least 95% pain free. I am very happy with the results I have seen with this product and intend to continue with it from now on.
